Once you’ve reached the titular city of Baldur’s Gate in Act 3 of Larian’s RPG, you’ll find yourself embroiled in all different kinds of plots. One particular set of murders in the Open Hand Temple may catch your eye, and it’s worth seeing through for the benefits it offers to your Baldur’s Gate 3Â adventures.
Upon reaching Rivington, you can head to the Open Hand Temple and notice a commotion. Head inside, and you’ll be introduced to one of the best characters in this entire RPG: Valeria, a flying elephant investigator. It rules.
The local priest has been killed in an apparent murder-suicide with a refugee. That’s Valeria’s conclusion, anyways. Your job, if you accept it, is to find new evidence on the case. Aside from the allure of a good mystery, this is a really handy quest to solve in the long run.
You can head into the nearby infirmary to inquire about the state of Father Lorgan and how he died, as well as recover a key. The main evidence for the Open Hand Temple murders, though, lies downstairs.
Where to find the murder weapon and flower key
Head down to the Open Hand Temple’s crypt, where you might already be going for a different side quest. Rather than the actual tombs, though, look at and around the altar. There are two buttons, hiding behind two signs on each side of the back wall. You’ll need to pass Perception checks to see them.
Push both buttons, and the wall will open, leading to a hideaway where several people are chatting. Get everyone into sneaking position and spring the trap. These are, like many other encounters, morphlings. They’re not too difficult, and you can use the height of the upper area to your advantage; knock the morphlings off, and start lobbing attacks from on high.
Once the area is clear, you’ll want to find two different items. The first is a floral key, which should be on one of the morphlings you’ve taken out. This will be the next main step of the quest, but there’s another piece of hard evidence we can uncover here.
Walk down around the water, and a Perception check can reveal a hiding place, near where the blood stops. Raid it, and you’ll find the murder weapon. Already, this Baldur’s Gate 3 mystery is starting to come together.
Head back outside when you’re ready, as you’ll need to find where to use the key. And it’s not inside this cave.
Where to use the flower key in Baldur’s Gate 3
You’ll need to get past the first blockade of Fists and Steel Watch, either by sneaking or paying up, and get into the next ring outside the city of Baldur’s Gate. The building you’re looking for is Fraygo’s Flophouse. It’s a place for wayward souls to lay their heads. And alongside getting some leads on other quests, you can learn more about the Open Hand Temple murders here.
Head inside, up the stairs, and up another ladder to reach the attic. Inside, you’ll find a wardrobe all by itself. Use the key on the wardrobe, and you’ll step through into a secret room.
In here, you’ll find a ton of info about what’s been going on. Would-be Bhaalists are assassinating citizens on the list, with two confirmed takedowns required to gain access to the Temple of Bhaal. You can get the list here, as well as uncover another body. Raid the whole place for info.
Solving the Open Hand Temple Murders in Baldur’s Gate 3
Once you’re done here, head across the street to the South Span of Wyrm’s Crossing. Here, Valeria is enjoying a post-mystery celebration. Help the detective see the case needs to be reopened, and you’ll be sent on your way to meet up with their assistant, along with a pass that can get you into the Lower City.
This quest ties into several major overarching plots for the region, including those with the shapeshifting Orin and her cult. But for now, at least, we seem to have solved the Open Hand Temple murders in Baldur’s Gate 3 and found a way into the Lower City. Not bad for a day’s work, eh Holmes?
