How to master your abilities in Final Fantasy XVI (FF16)

It’s easy

Recommended Videos

Final Fantasy XVI can feel more like a Devil May Cry game than a Final Fantasy, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t RPG elements here. One of the main examples of this is the Abilities menu, which lets you learn an upgrade a growing roster of skills as you progress. In fact, one system the game glosses over is the method to master abilities. Fortunately, the process is quite simple.

To master abilities in Final Fantasy XVI, simply keep upgrading the ability in question with Ability Points. Eventually, the prompt will change from “Upgrade” to “Master,” which will trigger the ability’s final form. Just hold down the X Button as you would with any normal upgrade, and voila.

The process couldn’t be easier, and it unlocks some exciting new build options for Clive if you choose to pursue them.

What does mastering abilities do in Final Fantasy XVI?

The effect of mastering abilities in Final Fantasy XVI changes depending on the context. For Clive’s main moves in the middle of his skill tree, Mastering works like any other upgrade. These abilities will gain new traits that make them more effective in one way or another.

However, when Clive masters one of his equipable Eikon abilities, you can slot them into any Eikon skill slot. In other words, if you want to equip every skill Pheonix can learn, you can make it happen.

To learn what each upgrade does, press the Triangle button when you overlap a skill in the Abilities skill tree screen. This will give you a detailed look at you’re getting for your points. Fortunately, Final Fantasy XVI lets you respec at any point for free. So if choosing to master abilities in Final Fantasy XVI feels overwhelming to you, absolutely feel free to experiment with your playstyle!
