How to get wings in Terraria

We're soarin', we're flyin'

In Terraria, movement is one of, if not the most important aspect of the game. Whether you want to quickly find biomes overworld or easily maneuver the traps and enemies lying in ambush underground, wings are essential to any character’s progression.

How to get wings in Terraria

The first pair of wings you can acquire will depend on your world exploration progress and your game version.

The Fledgling Wings, added in Desktop version 1.4.0.1, are a starting item with fresh Journey Mode characters. Outside of Journey Mode, they can be found in pre-Hardmode by opening Sky Crates and Skyware Chests on Floating Islands (1/40 chance to drop). They are a nice stepping stone towards traditional wings but are quickly overshadowed by other options due to having a max flight height of 18 tiles.

If you’re looking for more traditional wings or are playing an earlier version of Terraria, then you have three accessible options available as soon as the Wall of Flesh is defeated:

  • Demon Wings – Crafted with 10x Feathers, 20x Souls of Flight, 15x Souls of Night
  • Angel Wings – Crafted with 10x Feathers, 20x Souls of Flight, 15 Souls of Light
  • Harpy Wings – Crafted with 20x Souls of Flight, a Giant Harpy Feather

How to acquire the materials for early wings in Terraria

  • Souls of Night – obtained by killing enemies in the Underground Crimson or Underground Corruption biomes with a 20% (36% in Expert Mode) chance to drop from each enemy
  • Souls of Light – obtained by killing enemies in the Underground Hallow biome with a 20% (36% in Expert Mode) chance to drop from each enemy
  • Souls of Flight – obtained by killing Wyverns in Space and are guaranteed to drop anywhere from five to ten per Wyvern
  • Giant Harpy Feathers – obtained by killing Harpies, which are commonly found at high altitudes around Floating Islands with a 0.5% chance to drop

Which wings are the easiest to farm in Terraria?

The Crimson/Corruption biome is typically one of the first biomes found in a world, which makes farming Souls of Night for the Demon Wings a simple process.

Souls of Light, used for the Angel Wings, can only be acquired in the Underground Hallow biome which doesn’t spawn until after the Wall of Flesh is defeated. If you’re having trouble finding the Hallow, it might be better to opt for farming Souls of Night or Giant Harpy Feathers instead.

With Souls of Light or Night in hand, you’ll need to take to the sky and farm Souls of Flight from Wyverns, which is most easily done by drawing them to a Floating Island for an easy kill. Harpies, which are also found around Floating Islands, commonly drop the feathers needed to craft both the Demon and Angel Wings.

It’s likely that by the time you finish farming Souls of Flight, you’ll have killed many Harpies and could get lucky with a Giant Harpy Feather drop. This is used for the Harpy Wings which are considered a slightly better pair of wings than the Angel/Demon Wings.

After acquiring the resources for whichever pair of wings you desire, they can be crafted using an Orichalcum or Mythril Anvil.

With the upgrade to both vertical and horizontal mobility, you’re one step closer to battling the Hardmode bosses that await you.
