No lambs are harmed in the process
Cult of the Lamb answered their fans’ pleas with the Relics of the Old Faith update. While the original delivered on aesthetics and fun, it had a limited lifespan. Once you defeated the Old Faith or unlocked every weapon and structure, that was pretty much a wrap.
Fortunately, the Relics of the Old Faith update added more bosses, more structures, and even more that we already covered. And arguably the most important addition above everything else was God Tears.
God Tears are the newest currency in the game. Defeating The One Who Waits opens the door for a new being, named ???. That isn’t a typo or a brain fart on my part. The being’s name is actually “???,” though you do get to rename them. I went with “Mandar.”
Mandar wants you to collect God Tears for them. They’ll spin a dial every time you give them one, which will generate one of four prizes at random. You can get a new Doctrine, a piece of a Holy Talisman to unlock one of the new fleeces with, new follower forms and necklaces, and more. So how do you get God Tears to turn them into prizes?
Devotion
Before the update, Devotion strictly unlocked weapons and structures. Once that was complete, you collected coins instead of Devotion. It just wasn’t as fun. It turns out that you really can have too much money.
The solution was to bring back Devotion, and this time, add a new prize. Once all of the new structures were unlocked, you can gather 1,395 Devotion to receive one God Tear. It takes a while, but if you are diligent about collecting, then you can reliably get a couple each session.
Purgatory
Purgatory is another new feature of Relics of the Old Faith. When ??? appears, they open a new dungeon in place of the fountain. Once per day, you can visit Purgatory for a limited run.
It is only five rooms: one for each realm and a boss fight. You won’t be able to collect any resources, but you can gather God Tear fragments from the chests. The boss fight will result in one whole God Tear if you win. Otherwise, the fragments are tallied up at the end of the run. The number of fragments required to create a whole God Tear does increase by 25 with each run, at least initially.
Defeat Minibosses
Another surefire way to obtain a God Tear is to defeat a miniboss. Defeating The One Who Waits will reset the four realms. You will have to unlock Anura, Anchor Deep, and Silk Cradle again with follower sacrifices. Dungeon crawls through the realms lets you gather resources, and with the addition of 16 new minibosses, you can gain some God Tears too. Just like in Purgatory, kill a miniboss and gain a God Tear.
The spinning prizes are exciting while they last. Even though it can be frustrating if you’re looking for a particular result, such as the light and dark necklaces, having to work for God Tears helps keep the game going.
