Game launches can be extremely rocky times, especially when it comes to online games. When you release it to the broader public, that’s when you start seeing more problems on individual networks and setups. Gray Zone Warfare is no exception. In this case, its anti-cheat software can be temperamental, but these workarounds may help.
The error that some players are reporting is “Anticheat failed to start 0x00020004.” Which prevents them from launching into the game.
Via Twitter, the developers have said that they’re working on fixing the anti-cheat issue. However, for now, the only work around they’re suggesting is.
- Shut the game down.
- Verify Files with Steam
- Right-click the game in your library, click the Installed Files tab, then hit Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Try launching again.
Solid advice most of the time, but the community goes more in depth.
Community recommended fix for Gray Zone Warfare anti-cheat error
To fix the anti-cheat failed to start error in Gray Zone Warfare, this is the solution the community found. Note that the developer hasn’t advised whether or not they endorse it, but the method seems harmless.
- Go to Gray Zone Warfare’s install folder. This is found wherever you set your Steam library to install. By default on Windows, this will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps/common/Gray Zone Warfare.
- Find the folder marked “EasyAntiCheat.”
- Run the executable “EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe
Once that has completed running, you can then relaunch the game and check to see if the error recurs.
The community is also adding two exceptions to your firewall. It’s hard to give specific instructions on how to do so, since the method depends on whether you’re managing your firewall on a software (OS) or hardware (router or modem) level. And depending on what OS or network hardware you’re using, the process is different.
However, these are the programs the community suggests adding to your firewall exceptions.
- EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup
- GZWClientEAC
If you’re not comfortable with either of these solutions, you can wait for a fix from the developer. Ideally, you don’t need to go through these processes just to play a game, so MadFinger Games will most likely be aiming to get Gray Zone Warfare to that state.
