Amassing as many Flower Points as possible in Super Mario RPG is useful since it enables you to use more special attacks in battle. To increase your FP, you need to collect Flower items, which come in three sizes. However, is there a way to farm Flower Points in Super Mario RPG?
Yes. But it’s maybe not worth the trouble.
Your best bet is to pick up as many as possible in your journey. Some ways to get more would be to save-scum the first run up Booster Hill until you grab as many as possible, or avoid letting the Elder of Seaside Town get tortured. Doing so, you’ll get enough Flower Points to get you through the end of the end of the game.
However, there are two instances where you can get an unlimited supply of Flower Points
Work as a Bellhop
The suite at Marrymore Inn is pretty pricey at 200 Coins. So maybe don’t make the mistake of repeatedly turning out the light to stay more nights than you paid for. Each additional night you stay will cost an extra 100 coins. If you can’t afford to pay, you’ll be put to work as a bellhop until you can cover your bill. It’s lame, kind of neat, but also potentially helpful.
As you serve customers at the Inn, they’ll tip you for your help. There is a range of possible tip rewards, and sometimes, this comes in the form of a flower tab.
This is all random chance, it can be extremely expensive, and it can take a while before you actually rack up a meaningful number of Flower Points. There is an infinite number available, but how much can you stand dealing with customers?
Feed a Toad
In Seaside Town, after you save the real citizens, there is a shop featuring a Toad who will taste mushrooms for you. According to them, hidden amongst normal mushrooms are special ones. While I think Mario is a prolific enough mushroom muncher that he should already be able to tell the difference, this Toad will reward you whenever you provide a special mushroom.
This is entirely random. You hand over regular Mushrooms, and the Toad will arbitrarily tell you what they are. It might be a Berry Mushroom, which nets you some syrup. Other times, it might be a “Rippin’ Mushroom” which gets you the handy Rock Candy. Finally, there are flower mushrooms that net you a Flower Tab.
This isn’t all that expensive. 10 mushrooms bought from the shop next door cost 40 coins. However, in those 10 mushrooms, it’s very unlikely that you’ll land even a single Flower Tab. And while there are no additional steps in the transaction beyond handing a mushroom to the Toad, the textboxes take time to clear. It can take a while to actually pay off. Even getting the screenshot for this guide took me longer than I wanted to spend talking to this Toad.
It’s up to you if your time is worth an unlimited number of Flower Points. However, in my opinion, it’s not worth the trouble. Your FP caps out at 99, and even playing it rather casually, I came pretty close to the maximum without farming FP. But, of course, it’s up to you to decide.
Super Mario RPG is available now for Switch.
