Most of the quests that you pick up in Stardew Valley are pretty straightforward, but there are some exceptions to this general rule. In particular, some of Qi’s Special Orders can be hard to figure out, especially if you’re doing them for the first time. None is less descriptive than Extended Family.
The text which accompanies this special order states:
“Family members of the legendary fish have returned to the valley. You have three days to catch Ms. Angler, Glacierfish Jr., Son of Crimsonfish, Radioactive Carp, and Legend II.”
These so-called relatives of the five legendary fish of Stardew Valley aren’t easy to track down and have very specific spawn points, but that’s not the worst part of this quest. In order to successfully complete Extended Family and get your hands on the 20 Qi Gems it rewards, you’ll have to catch all five visiting family members within three days of picking up the quest. No pressure.
How to complete Extended Family in Stardew Valley
Thankfully, although this quest comes with some pretty stringent limitations, you are helped by the fact that all of these fish can spawn at any time of year, but only as long as this quest remains active. You cannot catch these fish outside of Qi’s Special Order, but you can catch their non-quest-related legendary counterparts in the same location.
These fish are called ‘legendary fish’ for a reason, boasting difficulties between 80 and 110, so you’ll likely need to do everything you can to increase your fishing skill even if you’ve reached level 10 in Fishing. To do this, you can use the following items:
- Iridium or Advanced Iridium Rod
- Iridium Rod can be purchased from Willy for 7,500 Gold after reaching fishing level 6
- Trap Bobber
- Reduces the speed at which the catch progress bar goes down. Can either be purchased from Willy for 500 Gold after reaching fishing level 6 or crafted using:
- 1 Copper Bar
- 10 Sap

How to catch Ms. Angler in Stardew Valley
Difficulty rating: 85
Behaviour: Smooth
To catch Ms. Angler, make your way into Pelican Town and head to the small wooden bridge to the East of Jojamart and west of Pierre’s General Store. While standing on this bridge, make sure to face north before fishing or stand on the shore north of the bridge.
How to catch Glacierfish Jr. in Stardew Valley
Difficulty rating: 100
Behaviour: Mixed
Head down to the southern part of Cindersap Forest until you reach the Hat Mouse and then head east until you can see the biggest island in the river above you. You safest bet here is to head onto the island itself and stand on the southernmost tip fishing south.
How to catch Son of Crimsonfish in Stardew Valley
Difficulty rating: 95
Behaviour: Mixed
You can catch Son of Crimsonfish at any point off the easternmost shore of the beach and in any direction off of the easternmost pier. To get to this location, you’ll need to have rebuilt the broken bridge east of Elliot’s house using 300 Gold, but you should have done this by the time you’re in a position to begin Qi’s quests.
How to catch Radioactive Carp in Stardew Valley
Difficulty rating: 80
Behaviour: Dart
In order to catch the Radioactive Carp, you’ll need to have donated at least 60 artifacts to the Museum and have been given the Rusty Key as a reward for doing so. Once you’ve done this, head down into the Sewers and fish in the water there.
How to catch Legend II in Stardew Valley
Difficulty rating: 110
Behaviour: Dart
Legend II can be found in the waters near the Mines entrance, but the best way to catch it is by fishing off of the southernmost tip of the furthest island in this lake area. Start at the south west of the lake and use the bridges to make your way as far as you can, then stand at the southern tip of the final island, fishing south.
