How to clear Belarut Gaol in Elden Ring

You'll never look at jars the same way.

Belarut, Tower Settlement is defended by the Divine Beast Dancing Lion, but beneath the town’s streets there’s a dark dungeon where prisoners were onced tortured by being trapped inside of jars. The prison is still haunted by pleading screams, but these days, it’s mostly just a great place to get loot.

Belarut Gaol would be fairly easy to navigate if it weren’t for the piles of discarded jars forming spontaneous walls and hallways. In those makeshift passageways you can find the Greatjar helmet, some Hefty Cracked Pots, and the new Demi-Human Swordsman Yosh Spirit Ashes.

Entering Belarut Gaol

To get to Belarut Gaol, start at the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace and head west across the lake until you see an opening in the cliff beneath Belarut. As you initially make your way down the prison’s stairwell, watch out for a lunging enemy on your left that will try to push you to your death. Continue down the stairs until they collapse out from under you. From here there’s a room containing some Grace Mimics to your left and a bridge leading deeper into the prison on your right.

As you go down the bridge, the crying prisoners in the next few rooms will ignore you until attacked, so feel free to run right past them. Continue until you reach a large circular room with a pit in the middle. Here you’ll have to jump between the hanging pots to make your way to the floor. When you’re halfway down, look for a pot that’s close to a large ledge on the West side of the room. Jump that way to grab your first Hefty Cracked Pot from the chest on the ledge.

There are some Living Jars to fight in this room, but then you’ll go out toward a room with a bridge, but look out on your right for an ambush from a Mutated Prisoner. Head for the giant altar, but be ready when the ground falls out from under you again, and you land in a room filled with discarded jars and enemies. This small jar labyrinth definitely calls for hugging the right wall, and you’ll want to continue that way until you see a doorway leading down to a set of stairs.

Looting the jar labyrinth

Instead of going down, turn to the west and you should see some smashed jars that you can run over. Continue west around the large island of jars in the center of the space and turn left. You should see a handful of jars positioned like a stairway. Go up the stairs, and then jump to a set of jars on your left. Once there, you should be able to jump to the island of jars in the center of the room, where another Hefty Cracked Pot awaits you.

You’re almost out the proverbial woods now! Head back to the stairs at the east end of the room and fight the jars at the bottom of them. You’ll need to jump across a small gap to the other side of the room, but there are four Mutated Prisoners waiting to jump out at you on the other side. You can try kiting them out one by one, or you can get everyone’s attention and then run and jump back across the gap to the other side of the room. When they chase you, a handful of the prisoners will attempt a jump attack and fall to their deaths. If any of them make the jump, you can use a heavy weapon to push them back until they got stuck in the gap.

Now that’s all cleaned up, it’s time to go get our helmet. Instead of leaving this room, look on the right side until you fight a hanging jar just below floor level. Jump on it, and it’ll move up to another set of hanging jars. Make your way across these, and you’ll find yourself at that big altar where the Greatjar awaits you.

How to beat Demi-Human Swordsman Yosh

Once you’ve gotten the Greatjar, you’ll need to drop back into the labyrinth and go back to the stairwell. Jump across to where you fought the Mutated Prisoners and keep going across that platform until you’re standing on another hanging jar. Roll off to the ledge below and then jump down to the ground, and you’ll be standing in front of the Demi-Human Swordsman Yosh boss gate.

Yosh dishes out rapid attacks that inflict frost, getting caught in a single attack chain is more than likely enough to kill you. Avoid the initial hit in his attack chain at all costs, and if you have any Thawfrost Boluses, it’d be a good idea to keep them handy during the fight.

Luckily Yosh also doesn’t have much poise, so he’s fairly easy to stun. You can often keep him locked up by wailing away with a large weapon. You can cycle stun locking Yosh with rolling out of the way and avoiding his attacks while your Stamina refills. Having a spirit summon or another player with you seriously helps in this fight, since you can get Yosh moving in one direction while someone else attacks him from behind. Also, don’t forget about Scadutree Fragments – seriously. Once Yosh is dead, you can claim him as a spirit summon for your final prize.
