The Wandering Wight is a tough enemy that you will run into early in Black Myth: Wukong. This is how to fell the forsaken monk.

If you want to fight this guy early, then feel free, but it is not actually necessary to do so. He will drop an item you won’t even be able to pick until you have the Spirit upgrade for your Gourd, and you can just sneak around him if you want to. That said, if you want to kick his butt, there are some patterns you should really watch out for.

  • Fire is pretty good against this guy, so if you wish, go and face Guangzhi first. You will earn an interesting ability when you defeat him, which will be very useful in this fight, giving you access to a powerful spell that transforms you into Guangzhi, giving you access to his flaming spear and health bar, for a while.
  • The Wandering Wight does a lot of heavy, area-of-effect attacks, and it does considerable damage.
  • When he does a Wing-Chun-style flurry with his arms, he is about to slam the ground and then channel three increasingly large circles of damage that will cause rocks to explode upward. He then channels one last blast all the way out to maximum size, so don’t rush back in too quickly.
  • He can follow this up by forming sparks at his hand, then pushing the air toward you, doing a powerful, damaging blast. While he can pull this out on its own on rare occasions, he is almost guaranteed to do it as a follow-up to the ground slam. It can be hard to see through the dust in the air, so wait for the hand to start glowing steadily, then get ready to roll out of the way.
  • He has a three-move combo that he can do when he stomps; he will start with the powerful stomp move, then go for a low sweep with his right arm. This has a LOT of drag, and he will be pulled toward you quite a distance, so watch out and roll off the left. After that, he sweeps with the left hand, and this causes a wind effect that does damage all around him, so stay on the outside and don’t be fooled into thinking you can punish. After that, he darts forward two steps and smashes his hands together, doing yet another 360-degree flurry.
  • The alternative to the above attack is if he runs towards you for two steps, then stomps. He will quickly follow up with a slam into the ground that throws up rocks all around him, then the right and left arm swipes.
  • If he crouches down for a moment, he is about to do a powerful leap attack. This has quite the area of impact and will do a lot of damage. He then follows up with a couple of low swipes and will then go into the Wing-Chun arm movement and the forward blast, but much faster than the other attack. You can expect to get killed if he manages to pin you up against some terrain with this, so position carefully and stay central.

One of the best ways to deal with this chap is to give him space. Because he has quite aggressive attacks, be careful when you immobilize him. Unless you manage to break his stance while he is frozen, he will finish his animation when the spell wears off, and that’s going to hit you if you are not mindful of it.

The best thing about this big guy, and it does make me feel a little mean, is that enough incoming damage will break his poise and knock him down. It is possible to stun-lock him here if you really pour it on, so save a Heavy Attack to unleash as he tries to get up.

If you haven’t fought him already, then it’s a good idea to go and fight Guanzhi first, as he will drop a very useful item that makes your life much easier. You can find Guanzhi through the nearby temple gates, and he is, in my opinion, and easier fight because he just doesn’t hit as hard as this big fella.
