Announced at the “Back to Hogwarts” celebration (um what), WB unveiled a new project that will debut later this year: a feature-length Hogwarts Legacy making-of documentary. Given WB’s general penchant for “making-ofs” across all forms of media it makes perfect sense, and the trailer (which you can watch below) does a decent job of explaining the massive undertaking of recreating even a small slice of the Wizarding World.
Here’s the full rundown from WB on the reveal, as well as context for the event itself:
“The Wizardry Behind Hogwarts Legacy is a full-length feature set to release later this year and will be available to view on the official Hogwarts Legacy YouTube channel. Back to Hogwarts is an annual tradition recognized as one of the biggest moments in the Harry Potter fan’s calendar when wizards and witches board the Hogwarts Express on Platform 9 ¾ on Sept. 1 for a year of magical adventure at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In a unique celebration, each year fans come together online and in real life to celebrate the magic of these beloved stories and unite with their community.”
The studio behind the game (Avalanche) is no slouch when it comes to crafting open worlds, and the team immediately explains in the intro that “the castle itself is one of the most complex things [they’ve] ever built.” They claim that with even just “10% of the castle built” they “started getting lost” in testing, and it was at that point that they realized the scope of the project. Even just the teaser clip is an interesting look into the creative process.
