While there’s sadly still no trailer for the second season of The Last of Us, HBO has given fans the next best thing and shared a first glimpse of Season 2 ahead of its 2025 debut.
It’s nothing too exciting, only consisting of a pair of images shared to Twitter that show returning protagonists Joel and Ellie, who are obviously being played once again by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey respectively. Maybe it’s just me, but Pascal’s Joel does appear slightly older than he did in Season 1, which makes sense since The Last of Us Part 2 (which Season 2 will be based on) takes place four years after the first game.
Ramsey, by comparison, doesn’t seem any different from her Season 1 appearance. Although that’s kind of funny, since Ramsey is much closer to Ellie’s age in real-life now than in Season 1 (Ellie is 19 in The Last of Us Part 2, whilst Ramsey is 20). Considering the sort of things Ellie will eventually go through in Season 2, maybe Ramsey we’ll see her demeanor and appearance change as events transpire.
Honestly, I’m far more intrigued to see how Kaitlyn Dever will look as Abby. I won’t spoil anything for those who haven’t touched the games and are only familiar with the show, but Abby is a very important character in The Last of Us Part 2. She’s expected to play a similarly big role in Season 2. Plus, Abby is noticeably buff in the game, with her body based on athlete Colleen Fotsch, so I wonder if Dever will have put on some muscle for the part.
While Season 2 will be drawing from The Last of Us Part 2, it’s been suggested the show will get at least a third season. This’ll likely mean the plot of The Last of Us Part 2 will be expanded upon and stretched out to cover two seasons, or maybe the show will feature a few new original storylines to pad things out. Either way, certain key events will probably be saved for Season 3, though I can think of a fantastic stopping point for Season 2 that’ll leave fans unfamiliar with the source material on the edge of their seats.
