Helldivers 2 currencies explained

Granted, the situation is a tad more complex than we expected it to be.

Even though Helldivers 2 is a full-fledged, true-blooded game-as-a-service, with all the good and bad that this entails, most players were probably surprised to discover that it’s not pay-to-win at all. The issue, however, is that Helldivers 2 has at least 4 unique currencies to keep track of.

Actually, depending on how you count them, there are either 4 or 6 distinctive currencies/resources to collect in Helldivers 2. The good news, of course, is that you can earn oodles of them through regular gameplay, to the point that it’s entirely feasible to purchase the Premium Warbond (battle pass) without spending a dime. To successfully navigate the game’s storefront, though, you’ll need to know what the difference is between Requisition Slips and Medals, for example.

All currencies in Helldivers 2

Even if you’re only just kicking off your democratic Helldivers 2 career, you will quickly make the distinction between four different resources and/or currencies:

  • Requisition Slips
  • Medals
  • Super Credits
  • Samples

The first three currencies appear to be an economy mainstay that won’t change as the community progresses in Helldivers 2‘s meta-campaign mode, but Samples themselves actually have two additional alternatives that vary depending on the difficulty of your mission. More on that later, however.

Helldivers 2: Requisition Slips explained

Your most basic, easy-to-get resource in Helldivers 2 are the Requisition Slips. This currency is awarded for virtually everything you do in the game, mainly completing objectives and missions, and wrapping up community-wide Major Orders. You spend your Requisition Slips exclusively on purchasing new Stratagems, though you’ll quickly find that even mid-game Stratagems get really expensive really quickly. You’ll need to be quite efficient with completing objectives to keep up with your Slip needs, in your experience.

Helldivers 2: Medals explained

Medals are more interesting than Requisition Slips, in that you use them to unlock goodies in your Warbond and Premium Warbond interfaces. It’s crucial to understand that Medals are the only way to unlock usable gear in Helldivers 2. There’s no unlock tree or XP accretion system to keep track of in this regard; if you don’t spend your Medals on new gear via the Warbond, you’ll be stuck with your baseline bullpup carbine and the regular Helldiver armor.

Indeed, the entire game is built around this battle pass system, but the good news is that Medals are not hard to get at all. In fact, not only do you receive Medals purely for completing designated objectives, but you can also find loads of them hidden in missions, to the point that it’s relatively common to wrap up a run only to extract with 20ish Medals in one go.

Helldivers 2: Super Credits explained

Super Credits are, in effect, Helldivers 2‘s “premium currency,” as they’re the sole resource you can spend money on in the game. Similarly, Super Credits can only really be used to purchase two things: the Premium Warbond, and the rotating sets of Helldiver armor in the real-money shop. At this time, there have been no gadgets, weapons, or Stratagems made available for purchase via Super Credits.

Now, you will want to keep in mind that Super Credits can, in fact, be found in missions as well. We recommend exploring points of interest, as we’ve had great luck finding Super Credits in closed-off bunkers and tucked away behind friendship doors. You get 10 Super Credits per stack, and there’s a randomized amount of stacks peppered about any given deployment.

Helldivers 2: Samples explained

Finally, there are the Samples, which come in three distinctive varieties:

  • Green Samples – found in early-game deployments, level 1 missions and above
  • Orange Samples – found in mid-game deployments, level 4 missions and above
  • Purple Samples – found in late-game deployments, level 7 and above

Broadly, you’ll be using any and all Samples you find to upgrade your battlecruiser vessel and improve various types of Stratagem categories. Samples are quite unlike any other Helldivers 2 resource as they are not added to your inventory upon pickup. Instead, they can be found randomly strewn about the levels (usually around points of interest), and you drop them if you die.

The saving grace is that any and all Samples collected during a run are given out team-wide. So, if you die to a half-a-tonne’s worth of Hellbomb and drop 10 Samples, your comrade Helldivers can pick up the resources for you. As long as one Helldiver extracts the Samples, the entire team will receive them.

Naturally, it’s within reason that Arrowhead Studios will introduce more resources as Helldivers 2 continues its game-as-a-service production, but for the time being, that’s all we’ve got. Stock up on those Medals, then, and get cracking!
