Granblue Fantasy: Versus receives game-changing update today

New mechanics, balance tweaks, and more

Granblue Fantasy: Versus is still holding its own. Despite playing host to a niche IP, and launching into a brutally competitive time for the fighting game scene, CyGames’ lavish-looking anime scrapper still carved out a community for itself, one that has stayed true to their chosen title’s great looks, engaging action, and — importantly — its unbelievably hot cast of characters.

This week, two years on from the title’s launch, Granblue Fantasy: Versus is receiving its 2.80 update, a literal game-changing affair that will not only bring about a fresh run of buffs and nerfs to the roster, but will also be adding no less than three brand new mechanics to GF:V‘s core gameplay, shaking up the meta and, hopefully, making its combat more exciting and engaging than it has ever been.

The only problem is… CyGames has still not said what these three new mechanics, (or “actions”) are.

Updating a fighter with new mechanics has proven, in the past, to be a great way to add a new lease of life to gameplay. Take for example Street Fighter V‘s addition of second V-Triggers, or the still underutilized “V-Shift” dodge. Of course, new mechanics can also mess with the status quo, throwing long-time players right off of their game, or simply breaking a title’s flow completely. For the most part, however, evolution in a fighter is a good thing, and hopefully, the new update will not only improve Granblue Fantasy: Versus as a fighter, but might also help it get back on the map in time for the summer. Although, frankly, adding rollback netcode and crossplay would go far to do just that.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see what improvements CyGames has up its sleeves. Of course, none of these will apply to my wolf boy Eustace. How do you improve upon that dude? Sigh…

Granblue Fantasy: Versus is available now on PS4 and PC. Update 2.80 is scheduled to launch later today.
