God of War: Ascension ‘pulls back’ violence against women

Kratos has killed a lot of people, and he’s never been too picky about who. From harpies to gorgons, the God of War star has been just as eager to kill female opponents as male ones, but Sony Santa Monica has gotten a bit wary of their protagonist’s unisex viciousness.

Talking to IGN, Sony’s David Hewitt has revealed that God of War: Ascension will scale back the violence perpetuated against women.

“There are some things we’ve pulled back from,” he said. “I think where this has been an issue is with violence against women — the team’s pulled back from some of that and assessed that a little more carefully. There are certain things that carry has a different kind of resonance that we don’t want to get into. This isn’t about statement-making in that regard. It’s about fleshing out this character.”

Given the monstrous nature of most of Kratos’ opponents, I never found the imagery too troubling, but I can definitely see why Sony wants to steer clear of the powder keg altogether. Anyway, you may proceed to the obligatory, “Oh but violence against MEN is okay!?” posts.
