The indie-developed Frozen Synapse has made a big splash since its release earlier in the summer. Our very own Dutch doughnut Maurice Tan gave it a 9 in his review, which probably means he really likes it. If you didn’t pick up the game in the recent Steam Summer sale, then don’t despair as Frozen Synapse is half price ($12.49) in this weekend’s Steam sale.
If you’ve no idea what the game is about, it’s a top-down tactical shooter where you control squads of virtual drones as they attempt to achieve a variety of objectives whilst trying to avoid being gunned down by an opposing force. You plot your moves for each squad member, then press the play button and see your troops all get mown down in real time. At least, that’s what I see — I don’t know, you might be better at this than me.
Frozen Synapse‘s has a full singleplayer campaign but the real joy comes from multiplayer. Trying to outfox your friends is a really tense experience and the few matches I’ve had have been a real nail biter. When you purchase Frozen Synapse you’ll get a second copy to gift to a friend, so there’s no reason not to engage in some multiplayer fun. There’s now a singleplayer demo for PC and Mac, so there’s no excuse not to give this great title a go.
