FromSoftware is not working on Elden Ring 2 right now, but the IP will come back in the future

Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that the studio is currently working on multiple projects.

There’s no denying that Elden Ring is one of the best and most successful video games that FromSoftware has ever made. As a result of this reputation, some fans are hoping that a sequel is already in development, but it seems that the studio has other plans.

Earlier today, Elden Ring‘s DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree won the Grand Award at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia. As reported by IGN Japan (and translated by Automaton Media) Hidetaka Miyazaki, the iconic president of FromSoftware and the director of Elden Ring & many other games, answered some questions about the future of the company to the press.

Naturally, journalists asked him about the Elden Ring IP, to which Miyazaki responded: “We’re not really considering developments such as an Elden Ring 2“, confirming that FromSoftware is not working on a potential sequel right now. But there’s still hope for the IP, because he also added: “I would like to make it clear that we are not denying the possibility of developing the Elden Ring IP in some form in the future”.

Of course, FromSoftware is not abandoning the Elden Ring IP because why would they? After all, Elden Ring was extremely successful: it sold more than 25 million units by June 2024, and it received countless positive reviews from critics and fans alike. Not to mention that its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, was so high-quality and expansive that it was even nominated for Game of the Year in The Game Awards 2024, marking the very first time a DLC was nominated for this category (Although this nomination was highly controversial as well).

So, what is FromSoftware currently working on?

The development of Elden Ring took approximately five years to complete, so it’s most likely the developers at FromSoftware want to work on something else before diving back again into such an ambitious world. During the aforementioned event, Miyazaki clarified that the developers are currently working on multiple projects at the same time, and he added that they will tackle a wide variety of genres. That sounds both exciting and promising, but it also has left fans wondering what exactly the studio is working on.

FromSoftware’s last full game was 2023’s Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, and it has not announced a new project afterward. Naturally, this has lead to fans to theorize what game they may be currently developing. Is it the fifth installment in the Dark Souls franchise? A sequel to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice? Or maybe it’s Armored Core VII? There’s even a slight possibility that the stars will align, and FromSoftware is actually working on a Bloodborne sequel or remaster alongside Sony.

It’s important to note that the studio has previously announced Sekiro and Armored Core VI during the 2017 and 2022 editions of The Game Awards, so it seems that it has a preference for revealing its new games during this particular awards ceremony. So, who knows? Maybe we’ll get an update on FromSoftware’s next project during The Game Awards 2024.
