I talk about the Mega Man comic sooooo friggin’ much that it’s easy to forget the other videogame property under Archie Comic’s umbrella: Sonic the Hedgehog. I’m nowhere as big a Sonic nut as a Mega Man one, but I do enjoy reading up on the Blue Blur’s print shenanigans whenever I can. The comic is often a bit hard to follow, considering the nearly 20 years of backstory that is constantly referenced, yet it’s such a different beast compared to the games that I can’t help but be fascinated by it.
Archie has sent me a few pages from issue 38 of Sonic Universe, the spin-off series that tracks the events that occur off-panel from the main comic. It’s the second part of the “Scrambled” story arc in which Eggman goes on a massive hunt against all those who have wronged him, including his nephew Snively. Whenever I read Snively’s dialog, I hear Charlie Adler’s voice in my head. In the last page in the gallery, you see Snively creepily sneaking up on a young girl, probably to tell her to stay out of his salmon bushes.
The rest of the pages show an Eggman on the warpath, a far cry from the bumbling buffoon he’s made out to be in the games. He’s got a minion who looks like a Judge from Judge Dredd, a new Metal Sonic, and a roboticized Sally Acorn ready to lead his army of spider walkers into a war he purposely instigated just to flush a single guy out of hiding.
Yeah, and what’s his game counterpart doing? Making an intergalactic Disney World. What a jabroni.
