I don’t know what’s going on in that video, and frankly I don’t need to know. I am far too ensorcled by the saccharine whimsy contained in these precious few minutes to care. What I do know is that Dewy’s Adventure is the kind of fun, kid-friendly game that is going to give the Wii a real boost in terms of software. Even if it sucks, it won’t matter, because that’s the kind of cuteness you could bottle and sell to even the nazis.
I’ll admit it — despite my stern and cold exterior, I’m a sucker for a cute, bouncy and enchantingly upbeat videogame from time to time. The cold, drab grey and gritty meatheads of ‘photorealistic’ games get so dull after a time. When I want beauty in gaming, sometimes only the most childish graphics will do. Like Super Mario Galaxy , Dewy’s Adventure appears to use the Wii hardware to the fullest, utilizing artistry to make up for the console’s less powerful specs. I feel the effort’s paid off.
The current crop of developers who have used the Wii’s lack of power as an excuse to produce shoddy PS2-era visuals should be utterly ashamed of themselves. They need to take a good look at games like Dewy’s Adventure and see that creativity and talent can easily compete with Unreal-powered graphical horsepower. Maybe I’m alone in that opinion, but I stand by it.
Hit the jump for two more Dewy videos that are so sweet they should be illegal, and cheers to Justin for pointing me their way.
