Doom 2 is going neon with this upcoming synthwave-inspired ‘megawad’

Doom needed a dash of purple.

The one thing about the original Doom and Doom 2 was they really liked to emphasize the dreary colors to match the guttural 90s violence. Combined with some of the murkier, bloodier hellscape levels, id Software’s iconic series is not exactly known for its liberal use of bright colors.

Until now, that is. As you can see, ModDB user DoomMate is currently in the midst of creating a mod for Doom 2 that can only be described as “neon.” While it’s still a work-in-progress, “Volt Laser” is promising a large selection of custom maps that have taken cues from a more synthwave/cyberpunk aesthetic.

This “megawad” will contain 35 levels, featuring a city, underground, some outskirts, and more. You can see the progress that’s been made in the video above, and I, for one, am looking forward to running around maps that have purple floors and teal buttons.

Deus-Doom? System Doom?

As mentioned, “Volt Laser” is still being worked on. Its creator did say they wanted it out by November, but have had to delay releasing the mod due to other commitments. At this time, there’s no definite launch day, but it should hopefully be before the end of the year.

However, DoomMate did post recently with some updates from the project, including some more images. I don’t know about you, but that skyline in the distance is giving me mad original Deus Ex vibes. Or some other throwback piece of dystopian science fiction.

In any case, I’m here for it. Honestly, I’ll be surprised if I ever get bored of seeing Doom mods. We’ve all played the games to death and I know I go on about fan-made content a lot, but if I had even an iota of investment and talent as a lot of modders do, you wouldn’t be reading this article right now.
