Did you know Destiny 2 is probably going to sunset fishing?

Toss those lures while you still can.

I’m not one for FOMO, feature deprecation, and content sunsetting. Time and again, I’ve voiced my opinions on these matters, but the schtick keeps rearing its ugly head quite often. The latest (potential) victim? Fishing in Destiny 2, believe it or not, is as beloved as it might be.

Destiny 2 introduced fishing into its eclectic mix of activities during the Season of the Deep. Veteran players will know that this was, essentially, during the height of the community’s unhappiness with how Bungie was handling the year of Lightfall. As such, this simple little activity became a bit of a highlight in trying times, even if it wasn’t hugely significant in the grand scheme of things. It’s a bit of a bummer, then, that Bungie appears to be looking to sunset fishing in Destiny 2 with the release of The Final Shape DLC, as per its recently updated “Items Being Deprecated at the Start of Year 7” webpage.

Destiny 2’s fishing system is being ‘deprecated’ in The Final Shape

Now, the only reason why I’m saying “probably” is that Bungie is yet to chime in on the matter of sunsetting the fishing mini-game in Destiny 2. The studio is very well aware of the community’s stance on content sunsetting, and it’s certainly possible that the feature will be brought back in some form down the line. As per the blog mentioned above, though, the Fishing Tackle is one of the items that will be 100% unavailable after The Final Shape comes out.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, perhaps. As widely accepted and celebrated as the recent Into the Light content drop might’ve been, for one, a huge chunk of it will be carved out of the game with The Final Shape as well. Most notably, this includes the Pantheon boss-run mode, which is one of those things people have wanted access to for quite a long while now. At least the horde survival/defense mode is bound to stick around, I suppose?

One thing I’d like to highlight here is that I don’t even like fishing in Destiny 2. It just doesn’t feel like it fits into the game properly, especially now as the Guardians prepare for their final clash with The Witness and its Dread faction. Still, I hate to see the activity being yanked out of the game. Especially one that’s as innocuous and inoffensive as this. Who knows: the Fishing Tackle may end up being reintroduced at some point in the future. Perhaps even as a timed exclusive, as Bungie suggested might happen with the Pantheon.

Whatever the case may be, the good news is that the Destiny 2 community is now calm and collected, just weeks away from The Final Shape‘s grand release. From the looks of it, everyone is waiting to see if this is yet another Lightfall, or if we’re looking at something along the lines of The Taken King, Forsaken, or Witch Queen, as Bungie’s been promising all along.
