Defiance trailer blurs lines between TV and game mediums

TRION World’s Defiance is a rather bold idea, pairing a television show with a massively multiplayer online game on the promise of players being able to impact the whole of the story through their actions. The game’s E3 trailer, seen above, demonstrates this by combining footage from the upcoming Syfy Channel program with that of the game. 

I love that this is a thing, that the interactivity of videogames can inform the direction of a completely different type of storytelling. It is the sort of experimental direction which has incredible potential but seems a tremendous leap of faith considering the logistics and financial investment, which makes it all the more exciting. I’m not terribly eager to play an MMO-rooted shooter but nothing would please me more than to see it become a huge success, if only to prove that it can be done.
