It’s been a decade since Hipster Whale first made a splash with the Frogger-style road-crossing mobile game Crossy Road. Its colorful characters eventually returned in 2020’s Crossy Road Castle, and now they’re hopping on across the road to consoles.
The port will bring Crossy Road Castle to PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch sometime later in 2024. Ahead of that, there will be a public demo at BitSummit 2024, which takes place July 20-21 in Kyoto, Japan. You can refresh yourself on the perilous platforming at hand with the console announcement trailer below.
Sporting local and online multiplayer, Crossy Road Castle is a procedurally-generated platformer featuring 10 challenging towers and over 150 collectable characters and customization items. After hitting Apple Arcade as an exclusive in February 2020, it eventually found itself among the nominees for Destructoid’s best mobile game of the year.
Some tweaks have been made in the transition to new platforms. The UI has been overhauled for each version, and cross-platform multiplayer can be enjoyed between players on different consoles. Hipster Whale also promises a continuing schedule of regular content updates on consoles. These range from limited-time events with special levels to new character drops.
After spending the past four years and some change on Apple Arcade around the world, it’s nice to see Crossy Road Castle branch out further. It’s easy to pick up regardless of skill level, and hopefully the move to new platforms will give it even more room to grow.
