Creator of popular ‘Cedar Hill’ Project Zomboid mod bricks upwards of 200,000 saves after a ton of drama

This is how you lost your save file.

Let me preface this whole shebang by acknowledging that modders do largely thankless, unpaid work so the rest of us can enjoy the games we love just a little bit more.

With that out of the way: Archived in a now locked Reddit thread, the pressure of community demands and review bombing was enough for Cedar Hill mod creator Try Honestly to push an update to their mod, with over 200,000 subscribers on Steam, corrupting the save files of every player involved.

“I’ve rarely received any support from the community,” Try Honestly said on the now-deleted Steam Workshop page of their mod. “This mod is my creation, and I can do whatever I want with it. Sharing it doesn’t entitle anyone to sit back and throw unsolicited opinions.” See the full statement below:

Along with feeling burned by a few community members’ overzealous demands and threats, Try Honestly also mentions that several individuals began review-bombing their other mods. What initially began as a simple delisting of the mod due to a desire to move on quickly turned sour, with players who hadn’t yet been able to download the mod hurtling threats at the creator.

Try Honestly will certainly be banned by Steam for this outburst, per the Subscriber Agreement:

“…you agree that any Subscriber receiving distribution of your Workshop Contribution will have the same rights to use your Workshop Contribution (and will be subject to the same restrictions) as are set out in this Agreement for any other Subscriptions.”

Luckily, if you were one of the players affected, there may be a solution. A mirror of the mod is still available for download from Sky Mods. I wish everyone affected a very “your save loads properly and you can enjoy the game again.”
