[Character Studies is a series about videogame characteres talking about videogames. It used to be called Sundays with Sagat, but then we had to fire Sagat because he was unprofessional towards a famous person.]

You my remember Kyo and his maybe-girlfriend from a few weeks ago. Now he’s back, and this time, he’s got more than just Sagat on his mind.

The battle between the remake and the reinvention of a game series is ongoing. Would Nintendo have been better off making Other M a traditional 2D platformer instead of a platformer/beat ’em up/FPS hybrid? Would TMNT: Turtles in Time Reshelled have been more appealing if it looked more like the arcade original? Should Mega Man 10 have looked more like Hard Corps Extraction? Should Hard Corps Extraction look more like Contra 4?

These types of questions are like looking at a reflection of a reflection of a reflection, and Kyo doesn’t claim to have any easy answers. Instead, he approaches the subject with a level of neutrality and respect rarely seen on the internet. He also knows how to take a beating.

I think I like this Kyo guy.
