Staring up at flat panel screen playing an announcement trailer for Bionic Commando ‘s multiplayer mode, the game’s producer Ben Judd sarcastically told me he didn’t know what I was talking about when I mentioned it. In fact, that’s the same thing he told me months ago when we first saw the game at GDC.
So it was no surprise, but pleasant nonetheless, when the next day it was revealed that Bionic Commando would contain a multiplayer mode when it hits Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC later this year. Up to ten players will take on the role of an ESA Soldier in the games online mode, and will take full advantage of the game’s swing mechanic, which should add an interesting new layer of depth and strategy.
While the mode wasn’t playable, we were told that it would feature the standard online gametypes, like deathmatch and capture the flag. When I suggested that time-trials might be fun using the game’s swing mechanic, Judd told me that they’d been considering a race-like mode for multiplayer. We were also told that the title would have full support for detailed stat tracking, and would in some way be integreated with Capcom’s online community.
I’m was really digging the game’s swinging mechanic in single-player, and I can see it translating to quite a bit of fun online. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they’ll be letting us get our hands on it anytime soon; multiplayer likely won’t be playable at this year’s E3.
