That’s a helluva lot of Bison dollars
According to Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the veteran publisher is hoping that its next major release, Street Fighter 6 will sell a mighty 10 million copies over the course of its lifespan. Tsujimoto made the comments earlier this week in an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu.
“The Street Fighter series is our flagship title, so we had no hesitation in investing in it,” Tsujimoto said, in comments translated by VGC. “Over the past few years, multiple titles in the Resident Evil series have sold 10 million copies, and the Monster Hunter series now has titles that are aiming for 20 million copies.”
“Street Fighter V has already sold over seven million copies, so if we can make use of our digital sales experience, we should be able to aim for 10 million copies with the next game. That’s why we’re trying to do everything we couldn’t do before with Street Fighter 6 – that’s why we’re where we are today.”
Capcom’s lofty goal has obviously been targeted due to a variety of different factors. Street Fighter 6 is already expected to draw a wider single/casual player audience than its predecessor, thanks to its variety of side-modes including Arcade, Survival, and the lite-RPG “World Tour” mode. In addition, Street Fighter 6 will be available on Xbox platforms, a privilege not afforded Street Fighter V, which will also help bolster the numbers.
Finally, word of mouth from recent betas and playtests, as well as demo downloads have been extremely positive, which obviously gives the number-crunchers a little more reason to be pretty confident in the new sequel’s reception. Capcom has been on something of a roll ever since the 2018 launch of Monster Hunter World, which would fast become its greatest-selling release of all time.
Street Fighter 6 launches June 2 on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms. Be sure to check out our recent report on a full build, the internet’s joy at Cammy’s new friend, and the 10 characters that I think who make a fine fit as post-launch DLC.
