Two weeks and counting
You typically don’t see first-person shooters topping the Japanese software charts, but that’s exactly what Treyach’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III has done since its launch two weeks ago.
The first-person shooter moved 187,446 units since November 6 (143,817 in the fist week) on PS4, according to the latest information compiled by Japanese sales tracking group Media Create.
Per the same data, the title sold 32,022 additional copies on PS3 over the same period, and outsold other new releases like Project X Zone 2, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Need for Speed.
In comparison, last November’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare topped Japan’s charts in its opening week with 79,586 sales on PS3, plus 64,060 more on PS4, and 3,370 on Xbox One. The previous year, Call of Duty: Ghosts played runner-up to God Eater 2 with 190,631 sales on PS3 and 12,950 on Xbox 360. Ghosts released on PS4 in February 2014 and sold 13,701 in its debut.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the aspect of the data is how country’s platform preference has changed over the past couple years. Despite initially struggling to sell in Japan, the PS4 has become the leading platform of late, even outperforming the long-popular portable systems.
In its opening weekend, Black Ops III generated over $550 million worldwide.
