Pictured: the Stadia edition playerbase
Just recently Bungie announced that Destiny 2 would be arriving on Stadia, and the current PC, PS4, and Xbox One editions would feature cross-save functionality: yes, even PS4. But one thing they’re shying away from entirely (even though their former publisher Activision managed to get it done for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) is cross-play. That restriction, according to an FAQ posting this past week, extends to the Stadia version of the game.
Given that Stadia is a brand new unproven platform a lot of folks just kind of assumed that Destiny 2 might have some sort of connectivity between PC and Stadia, but that’s not going to happen, at least at launch. Here it is straight from the FAQ: “Stadia is its own ecosystem, just like current existing platforms. Stadia players will only be able to play with other Stadia players.”
The Stadia edition is immediately in a precarious spot. Folks already have their platforms of choice, so even with cross-save it might be tough to win people over on Stadia. Destiny 2 is a game that lives and dies by the amount of people online to play various activities with (especially the matchmaking-less raids), so Stadia just went from a “why not” purchase to a “wait and see” for a lot of people.
