Heading off into a brand new world
Blizzard Entertainment just announced a new project, and one that’s headed into a new world. Its next game is a currently untitled survival game, for PC and console, set in a “whole new universe.”
Announced via a recruiting post today, Blizzard Entertainment describes the new survival game:
We are going on a journey to a whole new universe, home to a brand-new survival game for PC and console. A place full of heroes we have yet to meet, stories yet to be told, and adventures yet to be lived. A vast realm of possibility, waiting to be explored.
For this new project, Blizzard is hiring new positions for the “unannounced survival game.” This includes roles in art, design, and engineering. Plus, there are a couple concept art shots on the site.
Not much more is known about the project at this time, outside targeting PC and consoles. Current Blizzard manager Mike Ybarra posted on Twitter, saying he’s played “many hours” of the project with the team.
Activision Blizzard has been at the center of the news cycle for many other reasons already. The publisher has been under scrutiny following the lawsuit from the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, and subsequent reports on its internal culture.
Microsoft also recently announced its intent to acquire Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7 billion. Now, Blizzard is announcing a new game amidst all the chaos.
For Blizzard, this adds another game to its list of upcoming titles floating around in the ether. Both Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 have been pushed back from previous expectations, leaving a gap in what it might produce in the meantime. If the Blizzard formula of taking a popular genre and putting a nice, new sheen over it can work on this survival game, then this could be pretty interesting. But it seems like it’ll be a while until we see what’s to come for the “unannounced survival game.”
