Overall best Astarion subclass in BG3

The best subclass for Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the Assassin. This is assuming you want Astarion to go pure damage and be an absolutory ruthless killer. As an Assassin, Astarion will be able to surprise attack enemies from the shadows with an automatic Advantage against surprised foes, making them automatic critical hits.

By going with the Assassin subclass, you will aim to have Astarion stealthily attack from the shadows and deal massive critical damage. If you build correctly with this subclass, Astarion is able to one shot enemies, killing them in a single attack.

Astarion the speedster as the Thief subclass

A nice alternative if you already have a ton of damage output via other members of your party is having Astarion invest in the Thief subclass. As a Thief, Astarion won’t do as much damage as he would as an Assassin. However, Astarion can do more out of combat tasks and fulfill that traditional Rogue archetype. If you need a character that can quickly traverse the battlefield, the Thief subclass may be your best choice.

The support option: Arcane Trickster

While not much of a traditional Rogue, if you need a more support-style option, you can have Astarion go with the Arcane Trickster subclass. Astarion will not be a ruthless killer as an Arcane Trickster. In fact, his damage output will overall be lower than the other two options. But you will get some additional magic Spells and Cantrips that Astarion can use. With this option Astarion is more of a hybrid Mage/Rogue as opposed to an all out damage dealer.

Now that you know the best subclass for Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, you should have a better idea how to build the character to fit your needs.
