Following the iPhone 5’s announcement, Apple unveiled new iPods today at its press conference in San Francisco.

First, the iPod Touch sees an upgrade. Apple: “It’s the world’s most popular music player… but a lot of people don’t realize that it’s also the world’s most popular videogame player as well.”

The fifth-generation Touch is so light and thin that it’s silly. It’s just 6.1mm thick, and 88 grams in weight. The front of the unit sports the same lovely display used in the iPhone 5, and the rear is brushed aluminum.

Inside, the dual-core A5 processor gives it graphical muscle for gaming that is 7 times faster than the previous model. It sports a speaker on the bottom edge of the unit, alongside the headphone jack and new “Lightning” connector. A 5 megapixel camera with flash is also included on the back, and a front-facing camera on the front does FaceTime and video.

For gaming and video, AirPlay Mirroring is now supported by the new Touch models. Expect 40 hours of music playback, 8 hours for video, and probably much less for gaming.

For the first time, iPod Touch comes in colors: aluminum, black, red, green and blue. Silly Wii Remote-like color-matched bracelets called iPod Touch Loops are also available.

Available in October, the new iPod Touch models will be priced at $299 for the 32GB or $399 for the 64GB.

Newly redesigned earphones called EarPods will be shipped with all new models.

The seventh generation of iPod Nano was also announced. It has a big 2.5-inch multitouch screen but is only 5.4mm, 38% thinner than the last Nano. It comes in seven colors: aluminum, black, purple, green, blue, yellow and red. It features Bluetooth connectivity and a new “Lightning” connector. Expect 30 hours of playback time.

The 16GB Nano will be priced at $149, available in October.
