While Wuthering Waves is a premium free-to-play game with a massive open world to explore, it’s the playable characters that will keep you coming back for more.
One of the main draws of games such as Tower of Fantasy, Genshin Impact, and Honkai: Star Rail is their gacha mechanics. These are how you acquire new characters for your party, learn about the game’s world in more detail, and how the developers make a little money back on their game. Every new character feels like a huge expansion to the lore because of their background and abilities. That’s why knowing who all the playable characters in Wuthering Waves are is so important.
All playable characters in Wuthering Waves
Below, I’ve listed every playable character in Wuthering Waves. While their best builds are still up for debate because, at the time of writing, the game hasn’t been released outside of a couple of closed betas, we do know a bit about who they are, where they’re from, and what they add to the story.
Rover M/F (Player character)
Rover M/F are the player-controlled characters in Wuthering Waves. Their role is to act as the player’s presence in the world, but they also have some handy abilities of their own. They seem to be able to manipulate the fabric of the world they inhabit, allowing them to hit enemies with multiple attacks with very little effort.
Verina (Jueyuan)
Verina is a Botanist from the New Federation who lives in Huanglong. She has a passion for flowers, always hoping they burst into life before her eyes. She’s capable of doing this, and it plays into one of her attacks, which I love because it contextualizes her role in the world by bringing it into combat.
Jianxin
Jianxin is the successor to Fengyiquan and a Taoist monk. She uses her amazing power to transform environmental Chi to create protective barriers for the body and mind. Her life’s ambition is to master the ultimate martial art, which would make her one of the greatest protectors the world of Wuthering Waves has ever known.
Taoqi
Taoqi is the Ministry of Development’s director of border defense. She’s a trustworthy friend who brings her expertise and dependability into battle to help support everyone who needs it. Not only that, but she’s strong, wielding a massive sword to make short work of enemies.
Yuanwu
Yuanwu really looks the part to me as the boss of the Nightingale Tea House. He uses boxing and lightning to deal damage to enemies, but he’s also a keen strategist and likes to go into a fight knowing the plan. More than any other character in Wuthering Waves, I resonate with Yuanwu because he’s exactly the type of character I’d love to meet and sit down for a chat with.
Danjin
Danjin is a member of the Midnight Rangers in Wuthering Waves. As such, she plays a big part in protecting the Jinzhou region from external threats and deploying wherever it’s needed most. She wields a sword with devastating efficiency and will be a great addition to anyone’s party if they welcome her in.
Mortefi
Mordefi is a Tacetite specialist hailing from the New Federation. He’s knowledgeable and wears his expertise on his skin. There are no weapons here, just amazing crystalline attacks that resemble dragons. This character fights with real fury and is definitely one I’m excited to learn more about as we travel together.
Sanhua
You won’t see much emotion from Sanhua. She was tragically born blind and given anomalous vision by the force slowly eroding the world. However, that force also bestowed upon her the power to control ice. Her attacks are something to behold. She’ll lash out with her hand or sword and leave a trail of spiked ice crystals in her wake. She is truly one of the most stunning Resonators in Wuthering Waves when it comes to sheer spectacle.
Chixia
Chixia is a character well-liked by all who meet her because she loves putting herself out there to be a hero and save someone’s day. With her dual pistols, she is an absolute menace in battle, making quick work of just about any enemy that dares to cross her path. She’s also somewhat of a fan favorite.
Baizhi
Baizhi researches Remnant Ecoacoustics from the Hauxu Academy and has a loyal creature called You’tan by her side. This is where she gets all of her healing powers, which she uses to help out the party and keep her on her feet so she can keep everyone safe. I think Baizhi is super interesting because she’s somehow acquired this entity in a world where strange creatures are often trying to kill you.
Yangyang
Maybe the most recognizable character in Wuthering Waves, Yangyang is another outrider with the Midnight Rangers. She uses her sword to soften up enemies before hitting them with a powerful wind attack that sees her resonate with the very air itself. She’s also able to sense incoming dangers, a useful ability not many Resonators share.
Aalto
Aalto is a professional information broker and easily the coolest character in Wuthering Waves. He moves around in combat, dodging enemies and making them lose track of him thanks to cloaking abilities. His ultimate is a powerful shot that sends almost anything flying.
Jiyan
Yet another member of the Midnight Rangers, Jiyan controls the winds around his lance to unleash brutal attacks on his enemies. He’s come from a family with no Resonator history, and that makes him fairly unique. This will undoubtedly play into his story arc that you’ll have to uncover once you pull him.
Lingyang
Lingyang is a member of the Liondance Troupe from Jinzhou. He uses his agility, size, and surprising strength to his advantage in combat. He also makes fantastic use of the ceremonial lion head he holds, which seems to be sentient, doling out damage in a large area while capitalizing on weakened foes with yet more attacks.
An’ke (Encore)
An’ke is a member of the Black Shores Union and uses her emotions to help her conquer foes in Wuthering Waves. She’s always seen as cute and positive but hides her deepest feelings beneath the surface, revealing them through the use of her cuddly Woolies; Cloudy and Cosmos, to unleash them upon anything unlucky enough to be standing in her way. There is something utterly terrifying about the way she wields power through not one but two stuffed toys that both set me on edge and influenced me to add her to my party.
Yinlin
Yinlin is a Resonator in Wuthering Waves who uses electricity as if it were a whip. She’s able to manipulate it to strike enemies and almost bend to her will as she wants it to. There’s a darkness to this electricity, though, and she uses that to call down massive bolts of black lightning from the sky to decimate clusters of enemies.
Kakarot (Calcharo)
Kakarot is a mercenary from the New Federation and leads the Ghost Hounds, a powerful group of warriors all with similar goals. You’d be forgiven for thinking he looks a bit like Final Fantasy 7‘s Sephiroth because I think that character very much inspired his design. His moves see him barely move his giant sword while causing massive damage to anything nearby.
Why are characters called Resonators in Wuthering Waves?
In Wuthering Waves, playable characters are called Resonators because they are individuals with the ability to ‘resonate’ with specific objects. They’ve each demonstrated the ability to pull a powerful ability out of seemingly nowhere by resonating with the Tacet Mask, which is a symbol on their body. Certain in-game lore entries suggest that their life experiences and subconscious mind influence a Resonator’s abilities.
