It’s hard not to like Age of Wonders 4, with its ridiculously varied content and progression rosters. This fantasy 4X game only got better as its first season pass rolled out, featuring Cthulhu among other things. It’s not over yet, though, as the second season pass is on the horizon.
In a surprising announcement on Steam, the Age of Wonders 4 developer Triumph Studios announced that not only will there be more paid content coming to the game, but that we’re due to receive a whole new expansion pass. This means three more big DLCs are now confirmed to be coming to AoW4, with the first, Ways of War, due to launch on November 5. This is an exciting predicament for all fans of the game: if Triumph manages to maintain the high level of quality it achieved with the first expansion pass offerings, AoW4 will essentially have doubled in size since it first came out.
Age of Wonders 4: Expansion Pass 2 features a hefty roster of new content
Age of Wonders 4‘s Expansion Pass 2 is already available on Steam with a price tag of 49,99 EUR, which is an admittedly steep price. We’ll have to wait and see whether Triumph will successfully deliver almost a full new AAA game’s worth of value to Age of Wonders 4, but so far, it’s looking quite good. All Expansion Pass 2 owners will get the following content over the course of the next year-or-so:
- Immediate access to the minor Herald of Glory DLC.
- November 5: Ways of War DLC.
- Q2 2025: Giant Kings DLC.
- Q3 2025: Archon Prophecy DLC.
Whereas the content included in the Herald of Glory pack is admittedly slim (some cosmetics, a Pegasus mount, and a unique Society Trait), the three subsequent releases promise to add about as much as any other major AoW4 DLC has in the past. In other words, expect new rulers, features, societal progression options, creature races, and loads more.
The first DLC on the docket, Ways of War, will for example focus on the Oathsworn culture. This faction of of hard-boiled warriors deploys hard-hitting monks and secretive assassins both, featured on the fancy new examples of ogrekin and simian races.
Oathsworn players will get access to Tomes of Discipline, Shades, Calamity, and Prosperity, each adding a wealth of new combat and exploration options to a budding new playthrough. Lots of fancy new stuff to look forward to, in other words.
Note, too, that Ways of War will introduce the “Introgue Happenings” events to Age of Wonders 4, which are basically multi-stage story events that introduce a narrative twist to regular skirmish matches. Examples include assassinations, coups, and betrayal opportunities, adding a zest of Crusader Kings to the experience.
We won’t have to wait long to see whether Ways of War ends up being all it’s made out to be, but so far, it looks like Triumph Studios is on the right track.
