Hooded Horse and Eremite Games have revealed their plans for 2023’s survival town builder, Against the Storm. It includes two free updates to further polish the game, as well as DLC with additional content.
Against the Storm was among my favorite games released last year for combining city building with roguelite elements to create a meaningful experience about efficiency and adaptability. It puts you in a fight against the harsh elements of a beleaguered world and the extremely short patience of a powerful monarch. Your only weapon is your well-honed urban planning skills.
Only the contents of the first patch (1.2) are revealed on the roadmap and consist mostly of aesthetic and quality-of-life updates. 1.3 is still yet to be confirmed. Beyond that, the team intends to release a DLC (assumedly paid) expansion. While the contents of the DLC are still being decided, they suggest it will include things like an additional playable species, another biome, and new buildings, events, perks, and orders.
A 1.1 patch including new decorations and portraits released mid-January. Today, alongside the announcement, patch 1.16 dropped, but is entirely bug fixes.
If you haven’t played Against the Storm, I can hardly muster a more enthusiastic recommendation. I know “roguelite” is a word that can cause a lot of people to immediately abandon interest, but I promise you that randomization and run-based features are harnessed for good and not tedium.
Against the Storm is available now for PC.
