The Mortal Kombat series hasn’t had a great history of spin-off games. Whether it be Special Forces or Sub-Zero: Mythologies, Midway only was usually able to only successfully spin-off laughable games instead of good ones.

But the cooperative Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, developed by Midway LA, was pretty damned good. In fact, it was probably my favorite game in the series, one-on-one fighter or otherwise. Series creator Ed Boon agrees.

“Monks was far and away the best spin-off,” he wrote on Twitter

He goes on to reveal that they were in talks to do a sequel before the Moorpark, California studio — also known as Paradox Development — was closed. Thus the fate of the sequel was sealed… at least for now. With Mortal Kombat 9 in development, maybe someone, somewhere realizes that gamers simply can’t fill their appetites for cooperative gaming.

Which two Mortal Kombat characters would you have liked to have see in the sequel?
