Everything that happened in One Piece’s Egghead Arc

The Egghead Arc in One Piece has been one of the most eventful arcs in the series, packed with revelations, backstories, and intense confrontations. Starting from Chapter 1058 up to the most recent chapter of the manga, making it one of the longest arcs in the series. As the arc comes to a close, here’s a summary of the major events that occurred during this arc.

Dissolution of the Warlord system

Egghead Arc started strong by keeping the Straw Hat Pirates up to date with world events. During the recent Reverie, the World Government announced the dissolution of the Warlord system and promptly initiated the arrest of the former Warlords. This sequence of events further resulted in Koby being captured by the Blackbeard Pirates, as well as Mihawk and Crocodile joining Buggy and forming Cross Guild.

Koby’s capture would further lead Garp and members of SWORD to rescue him. The operation would then pit Garp with Kuzan while also introducing the powers the members of the Blackbeard Pirates hold. Though Koby was eventually rescued, Garp took his place as a captive.

As for Buggy and Co., Cross Guild initiated a bounty system for the Marines. Each high-ranking Marine was given a level in stars or crowns, which corresponded to their respective bounties. Furthermore, Buggy also ignited Cross Guild members’ slumbering desire to seek One Piece. As such, Cross Guild joined the race for the mythical treasure.

Jewelry Bonney and Bartholomew Kuma’s backstories

The arc delved deep into the tragic histories of Jewelry Bonney and Bartholomew Kuma. It’s revealed that Bonney was Kuma’s adoptive daughter and that she is a measly 12-year-old child. She was the child of Ginny, a former slave and Kuma’s former love interest. After being experimented on by St. Jaygarcia Saturn, she developed Sapphire Scales and ultimately died in Sorbet Kingdom. Kuma then took her in and acted as her father ever since.

After Bonney developed Sapphire Scales herself, Kuma was forced to join the World Government and volunteer as a human test subject. He ultimately became a mechanical being devoid of any humanity. As such, Bonney sought Vegapunk for vengeance and a chance to return the former Warlord to his old self. However, the only thing she discovered was Kuma’s tragic past and the truth behind her identity.

On another note, she did get a power-up. With Luffy’s help, she acquired the ability to access a distorted future wherein she was the freest. As such, she could transform into Nika, though it is yet to be known whether she does gain Luffy’s absurd, reality-manipulating power.

Vegapunk’s inventions and the Egghead traitor

Given that Egghead was literally Vegapunk’s territory, it’s unsurprising that it was the home of many of his inventions. While most of them were truly groundbreaking, the most notable ones are the Seraphim and his Satellites. The Seraphim were essentially clones of the former Warlords. They were created as weapons that, in theory, would replace the Warlord’s battle prowess. Their high combat abilities were the result of a combination of the former Warlords’ fighting abilities, Lunarian’s physique, and a Paramythia Devil Fruit ability.

The Satellites, on the other hand, were copies of Vegapunk in different forms. He created them in order to accomplish a number of projects all at the same time. Despite all of them being Vegapunks, one still betrayed and aimed to eliminate the others. York sold herself to the World Government with the promise of being recognized as a Celestial Dragon. This led to all Vegapunks, except her and Lilith, being wiped out.

Vegapunk’s death and revelations

We’ve already known Dr. Vegapunk’s existence even during the early days of One Piece, yet only in Egghead Arc did we see his true appearance. Accompanying him was a lot of lore. He told Robin and the Straw Hat Pirates what happened after the tragedy of Ohara, especially how he and the Giants salvaged the books the archaeologists desperately tried to save. He also confessed to studying the Void Century, making him a criminal.

Another shocker came when Kizaru ultimately ended his old friend, thus triggering another cascade of revelation. In his final speech, Vegapunk revealed that the world was sinking, Joyboy was the first pirate and the World Government’s worst enemy, the existence of the Ancient Weapons, and his theories regarding the Devil Fruits and the Will of D.

The fall of the Heart Pirates and the Kid Pirates

The Heart Pirates — led by Law — and the Kid Pirates — led by Kid, were instrumental in defeating the Kaido-Big Mom alliance during the Wano Country Arc. Unfortunately, their glory was short-lived. After leaving Wano, Law was ambushed by Blackbeard and his cronies. Even though Law put up a fight, the Heart Pirates still ended up being obliterated. Fortunately, though, Bepo managed to escape with the incapacitated Law.

The Kid Pirates, on the other hand, had a less amazing exit. They reached Elbaph and once again faced the Red-Hair Pirates and their allies. But even before Kid could unleash his Damned Punk, Shanks had already knocked him unconscious. Dorry and Brogy’s combined attack then sent their ship under the sea.

Five Elders, Giants, and Emet

The Five Elders had always held great influence in the world of One Piece, yet very little is known about them. With the Buster Call and the hunt for Luffy and Vegapunk issued, these old geezers finally made a move. We then get to learn that each of these old men wield what seemed to be Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits. Each held formidable power in their own right, though one being stood up against them — the iron giant Emet.

Emet was an iron giant from Joyboy’s era. In fact, Emet met Joyboy in the flesh. Joyboy considered Emet to be a close friend and vice versa. Now, Emet’s role was more than just a backstory. Vegapunk held the Transponder Snail, broadcasting his final speech inside Emet. As such, destroying Emet was necessary to stop the broadcast. Furthermore, Emet sided with the Straw Hat Pirates and kept everyone at bay as they fled. It was Emet’s untying the knot of Joyboy’s strongest Haki that took down the Five Elders and the Marines.

Other than Emet, the Straw Hats also received help from the Giant Warrior Pirates. After kicking the Kid Pirates’ bottoms, Dorry and Brogy sailed to Egghead with their crew. They not only fought the Marines but also essentially snatched the Straw Hats out of Egghead. Naturally, their next destination and the next arc would be Elbaph!
