Tanjiro Kamado of Demon Slayer may only have been part of the corps for a short period of time, but the dramatic increase in his combat prowess is undeniable. Of course, his relentless pursuit of bettering himself plays an important role in his level-ups, but another major factor also contributes to his progression — Hinokami Kagura.
Hinokami Kagura always pops up during Tanjiro’s direst moments, allowing him to defeat opponents way above his league. Furthermore, mastery of the said technique makes him an overall better fighter. This makes one wonder what Hinokami Kagura exactly is.
Hinokami Kagura, or the Dance of the Fire God, is a traditional dance passed down through generations of the Kamado family. Initially, it appears to be a simple ceremonial dance performed annually to honor the Fire God. However, as the story progresses, it is revealed that this dance is far more than a mere ritual. It is a potent combat technique designed to defeat demons.
The technique’s origins are deeply rooted in the history of the Demon Slayer Corps. It is, after all, Sun Breathing, the original and most powerful of the Breathing Styles. It was originally created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest Demon Slayer in history.
Its decline was rooted in the fact that no other Demon Slayer could master the Breathing Style, not even when taught by Yoriichi himself. Its existence only remained in the form of Hinokami Kagura as Tanjiro’s ancestor, who was a close friend of Yoriichi, memorized and handed down the Sun Breathing moves in the form of a dance. The only known users of Hinokami Kagura are Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Sumiyoshi Kamado, Tanjuro Kamado, and Tanjiro Kamado.
