College Football 25 won’t release on PC, and players are furious

It’s been 11 years since we last got a college football game, but with the release of EA Sports College Football 25 on the horizon, hype is at an all-time high. Unfortunately for some, the development team has decided not to release the game on PC, sparking backlash from fans who don’t own a console.

With a July 19 release date now confirmed, we’re closer than ever to taking control of college teams from across the United States and building a dynasty that can lift the National Championship. Unfortunately, we’ll only be doing that on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, with the game not launching on PC.

While that may not be a surprise to some, it’s still a huge disappointment for those who don’t own one of the consoles, and college football fans have been voicing their frustrations about the situation.

“Dead on arrival,” wrote TylerDreamMemeBoi on Reddit. “Congrats, you alienated a third of your community, not to mention [left] money on the table,” while Andjhostet stated that they were “Selfishly hoping this game sucks since I can’t play it on PC.”

For many like Andjhostet, the news simply means that they’ll be unable to play the game at all, and have already declared they’ll be sticking to modded versions of NCAA Football 14, such as College Football Revamped. For some, they’ve already been playing it for 11 years, and don’t intend to buy a console solely to play the new addition to the game.

As for why it won’t be released on PC, it seems that the rumors of EA Sports being against modding is simply unfounded, with Mike Straw from Insider Gaming claiming that a source told him “that it generally isn’t profitable,” and that “supporting, patching and upgrading PC sports titles is apparently more expensive and more manpower intensive than it is for PS5 or Xbox.”

With the playbase smaller on PC, the development team would rather spend time working on the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S than spend months working on getting it to work on PC.

Still, perhaps not all hope is lost, as Madden NFL 25 is currently available to pre-purchase on Steam. Perhaps in a few years when EA Sports College Football has found its footing, we’ll see it make a triumphant arrival on PC too.
