I love how Hollywood looks down upon the game industry, yet still won’t stop making game movies that are ten times worse than the source material. You have to love that lack of self-awareness. Anyway, the movie industry’s latest poor victim is Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which has been confirmed for the world of motion pictures.
Columbia Pictures is working on the film as we speak, which makes sense given the studio’s Sony affiliation. Kyle Ward has been named as the writer, a man with previous game-to-film experience, having written the Kane & Lynch movie adaptation, as well as working on Hitman 2 for Fox.
Next to Metal Gear Solid, I have to say that a game based on Uncharted is one of the least necessary movie adaptations you can do, on account of the fact that the game was, itself, practically a movie. It was written, paced and acted like a classic adventure film, and as far as I’m concerned, any publisher that allows a movie to be made of it is admitting that the game is not strong enough to stand on its own two legs.
Which, of course, is nonsense, because Uncharted‘s story certainly did stand on its own. Hollywood needs to stick to making its own horrible movies, not take superior products and then make them rubbish.
