Every Destiny 2 fan almost certainly knows by now that the game’s director, Joe Blackburn, will be leaving the project ahead of The Final Shape‘s release later this year. The less widespread piece of information is that Blackburn’s replacement, Tyson Green, may well be bringing the heat with him.
Notably, Bungie’s latest TWID blog post has been dedicated to thanking Blackburn for all his hard work on Destiny, but the text also gives context to Green’s tenure at Bungie, and it’s very impressive indeed. “From leading multiplayer and Forge efforts in Halo 3, to most recently supporting the development of Fireteam Finder (among many other efforts), Tyson’s creativity and expertise have been a critical part of Bungie’s success and legacy,” says the blog.
Bungie’s Tyson Green is taking over Destiny 2
“To step into [Joe Blackburn’s] role is humbling, but also energizing, and I look forward to carrying on his work in service to our players and our team,” says Green. “I came to Bungie from the fan community and aspire to build things that players can share as common interests. From Halo 3’s Forge and File Share systems to Destiny’s Buildcrafting and Fireteam Finder, I am proudest of the things that bring our community together in collaboration. I look forward to more such opportunities in The Final Shape and the years of Destiny beyond.”
Most notably, Green began working at Bungie back in 1998, with Myth 2 being his first project. As he has been at the company for over two decades now, Green has precisely the sort of expertise and experience that it’ll take to whip Destiny 2 back into shape following its recent stumbles. The Final Shape needs to be nothing short of a slam dunk to bring the community back on board, and Green may well be the right person for the job in the end.
The loss of Joe Blackburn is still a big question mark for Destiny 2 at this time, naturally. Time and again, Blackburn jumped in for Bungie when the going got rough, and he was well-liked in the community, which means Green has got some big shoes to fill after he takes over. Yet, Green’s prior experience and expertise may well make him the perfect choice for Destiny‘s currently unpredictable long-term future.
Specifically, there’s one more DLC slated to launch this June, and a handful of “Episodes” are coming after it, with nothing else having been revealed just yet. The Destiny IP is incredibly important for Bungie right now, naturally. The company’s only other officially revealed project is the revival of Marathon as an extraction shooter, of all things, and it’ll probably take a while until that particular ball gets rolling. Presumably, there is a plan for Destiny after The Final Shape‘s Episodes run out, but what that is, nobody can currently tell.
