How to complete the Legacy Fortress mission in MW3 Zombies

As if the zombies weren't bad enough.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 evolved the Zombies mode to a staggering degree. With a sprawling map of Urzikstan filled with the undead and plenty of objectives to tackle, this extraction mode is a great way to break up the traditional multiplayer. For those looking for a challenge outside of surviving the zombie apocalypse, there is the Legacy Fortress. Here’s how to crack the bunker.

Taking down Legacy in Modern Warfare Zombies

Legacy Fortress is a ratcheted-up version of the various Mercenary Strongholds scattered about the dying city of Urzikstan. Unlike those generic strongholds, Legacy’s Fortress is filled with incredibly tough mercenaries, all of whom have very thick armor and a deadly arsenal. To complicate matters, there are also the helicopters. Oh yeah, Legacy has air support ready to rip you to ribbons.

What to bring while storming the castle

  • A friendly Hellhound goes a long way in drawing attention away from you.
  • Your weapon preference is entirely up to you, but I prefer an LMG thanks to its versatility, high ammo capacity, and power. Regardless of the weapon you choose, get it to Pack a Punch 2 for a much easier time.
  • Semtex or Thermite is recommended for dealing with Shield Soldiers.
  • Death Perception is fantastic for spotting foes behind walls.

The base itself is in Sector D2, west of Popov Power. Technically called Talanov Outpost, Legacy’s Fortress is in a Tier II zone, which only further complicates matters.

How to get inside Legacy Fortress in MW3 Zombies

Getting inside Legacy’s Fortress isn’t as simple as knocking on the door. There are several steps that are difficult in their own right before you can even breach the building.

  • Obtain a Mercenary Stronghold Keycard
    • Purchase from a Buy Station for 2000 Essence
    • Raid one of the various smaller merc bases and loot the keycard
    • Turn Road Warrior, stop a convoy, and lift the card from the merc remains
  • Use the Mercenary Stronghold Keycard to open the next tier of stronghold
    • Locate the safe inside to find the Legacy Keycard
  • Use the Legacy Keycard to get inside Legacy’s Fortress

Outside

With the Legacy Keycard in hand, you can get inside the base. However, that’s easier said than done. The first obstacle to deal with is the helicopters circling above the base. Stick to various bits of cover like outbuildings and overhangs should you draw too much attention. While a PILA would be ideal here, it’s not as versatile as an LMG. Should you have a PILA, it takes about four shots to drop a chopper.

With the helicopters no longer a threat, it’s time to deal with the guards and Sentry Turrets. During this process, try to have an exit strategy as the mercs may throw experimental gas to flush you out. Clear out the stragglers around the base before opening the door. Once you’ve opened said door, head back to cover outside as more mercs will filter out of the base. Deal with them accordingly and head inside.

Inside

Once inside, there are still plenty of mercs to contend with in addition to various traps like Sound Barriers. I cannot stress enough to play smart and don’t be a hero. Always try to have a way out of an area, keep your weapons topped off when you can, and move slowly. It is incredibly easy to be caught in a compromising situation that ruins the entire run.

Pay attention to the dummies and mines spread throughout the building. The mines are self-explanatory, but the dummies will pop a flashbang if hit. There are also a few trip wires, notably at the top of the stairs, that should be defused.

Taking on Legacy

Legacy is the titular boss of this fortress and he’s none too pleased about your progress up to this point. Inside the boss room on the second floor will be Legacy, some accompanying mercs, and traps. Watch the mines, don’t shoot the dummies, and strategically reload to avoid being caught with your pants down.

Another way to deal with Legacy is to clear out the exterior of the base like usual and open the door to his headquarters. However, instead of going inside, head atop the long garage/shed next to it. Using a weapon with the ability to penetrate walls, you can kill him through the wall. This is where the aforementioned LMG is pulling double duty. Equipping Armor Piercing Rounds to your LMG of choice before dropping in can make this last stretch much easier.

With no support outside the base, you can post up on the building and shoot through the wall/window to take down Legacy. It may take a few minutes, but you’ll know it’s working so long as the hit markers are appearing. Once you receive the notification that Legacy has passed, head inside, clear the traps and any remaining mercs to collect your reward from the Rift.
