The Last of Us: Joel looking forlorn. Naughty Dog

Aside from being a critically acclaimed series with praiseworthy writing, The Last of Us is also one of the best TV shows adapted from a video game. As such, more than a few people have hoped for a third entry in Naughty Dog’s harrowing, post-apocalyptic franchise. But it appears we shouldn’t expect to hear anything about it anytime soon.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, game director Neil Druckmann makes it clear that he’s not in a position to divulge information about a third game right now. When asked, he simply smiles and says that he’s unable to “say anything” at this point.

“My comms director over there will slaughter me,” Druckmann explains.

It doesn’t really get much clearer than that. While Druckmann did write an outline for a new The Last of Us story, Naughty Dog appears to remain quiet about whether it’s in development or not.

Season 2 is almost ready to go

Alongside this, Druckmann and the team working on the HBO adaptation are preparing for the next season. He says they’ve “outlined all of season 2” and are ready to film when the ongoing Hollywood strikes end.

With the recent TV show, the remake, and the upcoming Halloween Horror Night haunted walkthrough at Universal Studios Orlando, The Last of Us is very much keeping itself in the limelight.

It seems like it would be a missed opportunity if Naughty Dog decided not to do a third entry. While Druckmann’s words suggest something is in the pipeline. It’s just too early to say anything about it right now.
