Say hi to Benke to get the Battle-Tested Spear
The Battle-Tested Spear is the best overall polearm in Octopath Traveler 2. With a whopping 390 Phys. Atk. and 120 Critical, even the Warlord’s Spear doesn’t come close to hitting these damage heights. Fortunately, getting a Battle-Tested Spear yourself isn’t necessarily a tall order; you just need to be far enough in the game.
Similar to the Battle-Tested Blade, getting this weapon requires clearing chapter five of Hikari’s story. You’ll also need either Partitio or Throne in your party, though I highly recommend bringing Partitio to get the Battle-Tested Spear. Once these two prerequisites are sorted, here’s what you need to do.
Where to get the Battle-Tested Spear in Octopath Traveler 2
As you may have guessed from the requirements, the Battle-Tested Spear is hiding in Ku. Warp to the city and keep traveling north until you enter Castle Ku. From here, climb up the stairs until you approach the throne. If it is daytime, you’ll see Benkei here.
You’ll have free reign to use any Path Action you want on Benkei. However, the prize here is in his inventory. Should you choose to use Steal or Purchase on Benkei, you can grab Azuki Porridge, a Protective Bracelet, and the Battle-Tested Spear. Since the spear itself has a low chance to successfully steal, the easiest way to get it is to buy it with Partitio. You should have a decent chunk of change at this stage in the game, especially if you hire an NPC to lower the cost of items.
That’s honestly all there is to getting a Battle-Tested Spear. However, like the other Battle-Tested Weapons, you can opt to farm more copies of the polearm if you have ample time on your hands.
Can you farm the Battle-Tested Spear in Octopath Traveler 2?
If you absolutely must have multiple Battle-Tested Spears for your party, there is technically a way to make that happen. To farm these, make your way to the nearby town of Sai. If it is daytime, you’ll see a person unremarkably called “Townsperson” by the entrance. Use Challenge or Provoke to engage the Townsperson in battle. If you win, you’ll earn a small chance to obtain a Battle-Tested Spear.
Now, when I say “small chance,” I’m not kidding. The Battle-Tested Spear has only a 2% chance to drop from the Townsperson per victory. Fortunately, the Townsperson only has a strength rating of eight, so he isn’t quite as hard to farm as other NPCs in the game. If you do choose to grind for another spear, the Townsperson is weak to axes, bows, and ice.
Personally, I don’t necessarily think the Battle-Tested Spear is worth this kind of grind. Though it’s a fantastic polearm, there really isn’t any content in the game that demands this level of optimization. If you’re training for the superboss at the end of the game, I’d say that effort would be better spent raising the levels of your party members instead. It’s ultimately your call to decide if you want to pursue this weapon, so best of luck no matter which route you choose.
