Resident Evil Village accessibility update

Resident Evil Village accessibility update adds new options in October

Subtitle options, closed captions, and a permanent reticle

October will be a big month for Resident Evil fans, as it should be. While the main attraction is the Winters’ Expansion and Resident Evil Village Gold Edition on October 28, Capcom has more plans in store. Namely, a free accessibility update for Resident Evil Village.

Announced on Twitter, Capcom will add several accessibility features to the game:

  • Subtitle size, color, and background toggles
  • Speaker name display in story mode
  • Closed captions
  • Permanent reticle

It’s a fairly light suite of options, particularly as some game developers have stepped up their efforts to reach the widest possible audience. That said, every little bit adds up, and it’s never too late. The permanent reticle might help if you suffer from motion sickness.

I’ve heard complaints about a lack of FOV adjustments in Resident Evil Village, and that would’ve been a good inclusion here while Capcom is putting more time and energy into development. As it stands, there’s an FOV mod for the PC version. Once again, not ideal.

Third-person mode in Resident Evil Village
The accessibility update is free, but third-person mode will cost you.

The Resident Evil Village accessibility update will be released “alongside” the paid expansion and all-encompassing Gold Edition, which are due on October 28.

The Winters’ Expansion comes with third-person mode, a new “Shadows of Rose” storyline, and extra characters and stages in The Mercenaries Additional Orders — Chris Redfield, Karl Heisenberg, and yes, Lady D. Altogether, the bundle will cost $20.

I look forward to going HAM in October with a full third-person run, a Rose playthrough, and more arcadey horde slaying. I just hope the Mercenaries scoring isn’t a pain.
