I was pretty excited when I first heard about Valkyria Chronicles earlier this year. More RPGs on the PlayStation 3 is certainly a good thing, and Valkyria’s eye pleasing art style certainly helped to catch my attention. The game’s visuals were created with the CANVAS graphics engine, which is certainly an apt name, seeing as how it makes the game look like a moving watercolor painting.
Check out the attached screens to see for yourself.
Valkyria’s story focuses on Welkin, a soldier in the Federation’s 7th infantry platoon that is working to keep the small country of Gallia safe from an invading Empire. There will be over 100 customizable characters that can join Welkin’s force, and, thanks to the BLiTZ tactical battle system, you can control their real-time actions in addition to issuing standard tactical commands.
So it’s a real-time tactical RPG? Sounds good to me. I just hope it doesn’t have the same camera problems that Operation Darkness did. Valkyria Chronicles will be coming to the PS3 sometime this fall. And, according to Sony’s press conference, there will also be a version coming to the PlayStation Portable, but there’s no release date for that yet.
