Switching up the Saiyans
A lot of news came out of last weekend’s Dragon Ball FighterZ World Tour Finals. For many, the biggest scoop was the reveal of a new run of DLC characters, led by the awesome-looking Kefla. But also noted during the event were several mechanical and cosmetic changes that the fanbase can expect as part of the incoming season three.
In a video hosted by Tomoko Hiroki, the DBFZ producer offered exciting info on a new “Z Assist Select” feature, to be implemented in-game at the start of the new season. Essentially, Z Assist Select will allow players to choose one of three specific assist attacks for each of their team members, similar to the assist mechanics in titles such as Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
This is potentially a huge game-changer, as the variety of assist options will allow creative players to build bespoke combos for their chosen team. Perhaps you can find a way to end an extended string with a juggle for even further hits, or maybe you’ll call in a partner for an ender that puts distance between you and your hapless opponent.

While the combo possibilities aren’t exactly endless, I believe changes and mechanics such as these that will help adaptation and customisation to return to a fighting game scene which has, in recent years, been seemingly built around singular, optimised combos.
We also got to see a redesigned character select screen, readjusted for the continuously expanding roster. It looks very sharp, and in keeping with Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s excellent overall visual style and superb presentation. We may be heading into DBFZ‘s third year, but with cool new characters and exciting, meta-changing mechanics, it seems like this particular fighter’s peak period is yet to come.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
