Doom Eternal and Elder Scrolls Online will get free upgrades on PS5 and Xbox Series X

‘Our teams are working hard to ensure both titles will support backwards compatibility’

A bit of good news today: two more big-name games are going to get free upgrades for the next generation.

Bethesda announced this morning that both Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online were coming to Xbox Series X and PS5, and that they would be eligible for free upgrades. As a reminder, Microsoft has its SmartDelivery system ready to go to make that all pretty easy for everyone, while Sony has some sort of mystery program we don’t really know about yet. Bethesda says that it will share release windows and “a list of enhancements” in the coming weeks, but for now we know that the upgrades will be free, and that they will in fact come with “enhancements” of some kind (likely framerate and visual-related).

Additionally, the publisher states that they are “working hard to ensure both titles will support backward compatibility when the new consoles launch.” And what about future Bethesda games? It’s looking good, it seems: “we can confirm we are committed to offer free upgrades for current generation console owners of existing Bethesda titles we bring forward into the next generation of consoles.”

It sure looks like a lot of games early on in the next generation are going to be “lite remasters!” At least a lot of them are free.
