New consoles right around the corner!

While Lyle continues to be lost in whimsy, here’s what’s been happening in video games this past week featured in today’s episode:

  • PlayStation 5 is officially a thing and coming out holiday 2020!
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to PC on November 5!
  • Blizzard banning Blitzchung and more!

It’s crazy to think by the time the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett release next year their predecessors will be seven years old. It feels oddly short to me, but maybe that’s because we’ve had mid-generation consoles such as the “Pro” and “X.” Or maybe I’m blinded by nostalgia and the last generation felt just as quick, who knows. Looking at my shelves as I type this, I noticed my physical collection of games from this generation is not even half of what I accumulated during the last generation.

That’s probably because this felt like the console generation that I became more comfortable with digital releases. Both because of platforms like Steam and it just became more practical for me. The whole concept of digital games is something six or seven years ago I would have scoffed at it and would only put up with if the game was digital-only. I think what changed that perspective was both getting back into PC gaming and constantly playing newer games on a regular basis. Somewhere between that and dwindling shelf space, I no longer mind simply buying a digital copy, but I’ll still take a physical if given the choice.

Discharged question of the week: What do you think will be your fondest or most notable memories from this current generation? Personally, I think for me it’ll be all the controversies over rushed out the door games and “early access” skyrocketing to popularity as it did.
