Hint: Obsidian is owned by Microsoft
[Update: Private Division has now clarified that The Outer Wilds is “enhanced for both Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.” Specifically, the game “includes 4K textures and resolution on Xbox One X and PC, and upsamples to 4K from 1440p on PS4 Pro.” The Xbox One X still comes out on top in the end.]
The whole “half-generation” thing has been weird, to say the least.
Although we’ve had “slims” and slightly reworked consoles for ages, the whole “Xbox One X” and “PS4 Pro” thing has been muddled, as platform holders attempt to extend the generation a bit. Some games support said enhancements, some support 4K (with or without UHD bells and whistles, it depends), and some don’t. It’s really a roll of the dice and sometimes you don’t know what’s up until the last minute. Like now.
Speaking to Windows Central, a Private Division rep (the publisher) confirmed that The Outer Worlds, which launches next week, will only have enhancements for the Xbox One X, not the PS4 Pro. Said enhancements include 4K support, but we don’t know if there’s anything beyond that.
In case you haven’t been following along, Obsidian was purchased by Microsoft, which might be one of their smartest acquisitions yet. It stands to reason that just as Konami worked in tandem with Sony to make the Castlevania Requiem collection possible, Microsoft helped out their boy to make those Xbox One X enhancements happen smoothly.
This deal is even sweeter when you account for the fact that The Outer Worlds is going to be an Xbox Game Pass game. At launch you just download it and reap the 4K benefits: not a bad deal!
