What a great original box

Final Fantasy VII had one of those boxes: the ones burned in your brain decades later.

I should know, as one of the chief ways my school played FFVII was by bringing in the case with the game’s various discs (of three) to share between people as they completed each portion of it. Amazingly, I got all three discs back safe and sound eventually, but lost the case years later and had to purchase a “Greatest Hits” edition.

Nostalgia aside the cover is stunning, and so is this new remade version. Announced on Twitter in honor of the game’s September 7, 1997 North American release date, Square Enix shared their remake of the original artwork ahead of the launch of the Final Fantasy VII Remake in March 2020.

Midgar is one of the most memorable locales in any game to date, and we’re going to be spending quite a bit of time in it when the first part of the remake hits early next year. It’ll be fascinating to see what changed, and what stayed the same.
